Introduction

For 2011, art critic and curator Karen Smith returns to Modern Sky’s FAT ART project to curate this year’s event at Today Art Museum. The concept for FAT ART 2011 is “a world within the world”: by which we mean, the artists’ world brought into the world of the art museum. Taking the title HIVE, the exhibition centres on a series of private spaces, each one created by one of the participating artists. As a hive is home to a structured world of individual cells, so we provide each artist with a private cell in which to let their imagination unfold: the result a buzz of activity and a collection of intimate bitter-sweet sensations.

On May 15, we invite you Today Art Museum, Exhibition Hall 3, to enter our HIVE, and to experience the dynamic and diverse worlds of this equally divers group of artists.

For 2011, FAT ART 2011: HIVE, the group of fourteen artists selected to present their work introduces a few familiar faces, some famous personalities, and also includes several promising new artists. Masterful veterans Wang Jinsong, Yang Shu and Liu Wei are joined by Liang Shuo, Wang Mai, Nie Mu, Yu Gao, Zhang Wei, Pei Li, Bi Jianye, Jia Aili, Jiang Xiaochun, Li Shurui and Sun Yanchu. There will also be guest appearances from stars of stage and screen that will be revealed closer to the time.

Each one of the artists brings to their space artworks based on the signature style of their art and which has won them a following. But do not expect straight forward paintings or sculptures. Instead expect the unexpected: fourteen artists, fourteen realms of artistic brilliance.
